Tile Transformations

Simple home projects for the Easter holidays

As the Easter holidays approach, it's the perfect time to embrace a creative home refresh. If you're looking for an elegant yet achievable DIY project why not turn to the timeless beauty of tiles? With their ability to add texture, colour, and artisanal charm to any space, tiles can elevate even the smallest of surfaces into something truly special.

Perhaps you have left over tiles from another project and aren't sure what to do with them?

Today we're sharing six refined yet simple tiling projects that require minimal effort but deliver maximum impact—perfect for a long weekend of craftsmanship.

A simple backsplash

A small splashback behind a sink - be it in the kitchen, utility room, or downstairs cloakroom - can create a beautiful focal point with surprisingly little work. A handful of exquisite handmade tiles can protect your walls while adding a refined, tailored finish.

Opt for a contrasting grout to highlight individual tiles, or keep things seamless with a tone-on-tone effect for understated elegance.

Harriet used left over, soft green Ullswater Willow tiles from a bathroom renovation to create a simple yet perfectly formed splashback behind her kitchen sink.

Tiled windowsills: a subtle luxurious touch

Windowsills are often overlooked, yet they are an ideal surface for a subtle but striking upgrade.

Swapping a plain painted sill for a tiled one instantly enhances a room, catching the light and adding texture. Choose a hand painted pattern for a bold feature, or select a glazed tile in a soft pastel hue to reflect the season’s fresh, airy feel.

Transform an old table or vanity unit

Give a well-loved table, coffee stand or vanity unit a new lease of life with a tiled surface.

Whether you choose simple array of single coloured tiles or go for a patterned effect (think stripes, checkerboard or a border of a different colour) a tiled top can turn a humble piece of furniture into a bespoke statement.

It’s an ideal way to experiment with tile layouts on a manageable scale.

A unique tray or serving board

For those who love small-scale projects, why not craft a tiled tray, serving board or trivet?

A wooden tray base paired with a few striking tiles—perhaps a set of intricate patterned designs or a glossy, jewel-toned selection—can create a stylish and practical home accessory.

Perfect for displaying candles, perfumes, or serving afternoon tea with a hint of opulence.

Statement stair risers

If you have a staircase with exposed risers, applying tiles to this often-forgotten surface can instantly introduce character and depth whilst being durable and hardwearing too.

A row of beautifully patterned or hand-glazed tiles on each riser will create a stunning, artisan-inspired feature to last for years to come.

The perfect outdoor kitchen or bar

Transforming an area of your garden into a stylish and functional kitchen or bar is easier than you think, and tiles are the perfect addition to create a beautiful and durable finish.

Start with a sturdy surface, such as a concrete countertop, a repurposed table or workbench, or perhaps a pre-built structure made from blocks or bricks. Be sure to use a strong adhesive and waterproof grout to accompany your ceramic tiles to ensure you can enjoy the space for years to come.

Finish the space with a reclaimed sink, a BBQ or perhaps open shelves for storing the essentials - with just a little effort you'll have a beautiful, low-maintenance space that's perfect for entertaining all year round.
